How it works

Four stops and you know where to sleep

No forum rumours, no "they never fined me". What is known about each place, where it comes from, and what you need to get there and stay.

  1. Stop 1

Open the map, no account needed

The map, the listings and the search work without signing up. Answer four short questions and VanLife shows you first what suits the way you travel.

    • For adventurers, couples, families, groups, seniors or digital nomads
    • Spain and Portugal
VanLife screen: the map of Spain and Portugal with places to sleep and the verified and sun filters
  2. Stop 2

Check the seal before you park

Every place carries a legal status, and the "Verified" seal tells you where it comes from: for a public aire, its by-law or council notice; for a campsite, its licence or its website. When there is a link, you open it from the listing.

    • The source, linked
    • If nobody checks it again, the seal expires
VanLife screen: legal information for an aire, with the Verified seal and the local by-law quoted
  3. Stop 3

    Read the whole listing

Services, price, maximum stay and whether awnings and chairs are allowed. If we know the height limit, we tell you whether your vehicle fits; if we don't, we say so.

    • Water, disposal, electricity, wifi and showers
    • The height limit against your vehicle

  4. Stop 4

Park in the shade… or in the sun

Where the sun rises and sets at every place, so you can park in the cool or in the warmth, plus the 7-day forecast and the best night to stop.

    • Sunrise, sunset and the sun path
    • The best night of the week
VanLife screen: services of a place, the sun finder with a 7-day forecast and the sun and shade compass

The seals

What each one means, plainly

An overnight-parking app lives or dies by one word: tolerated. Here it does not mean "allowed". That is why every seal tells you where it comes from and, if nobody checks it again, it expires.

Something not right when you arrive? Report it from the listing itself.

  • Publicly legal

A public aire or car park where a local rule allows you to spend the night.

  • Private · paid

Campsite, private aire or camper park: you pay for the night and know where you stand.

  • Tolerated

No known rule forbids it. That is not a permit, and we tell you so.

  • Reported

There are recent reports. Better find somewhere else for tonight.

FAQ

What people usually ask us

A missing place, a bug or an idea? Write to us at info@vanlifetribu.com.

How much does it cost?

Nothing. Downloading and using it is free: the map, the listings, the legal seal, navigation and offline maps. If you live on the road, VanLife+ (€19.99 a year) adds multi-night trips, maps of where you are going and more questions to Lana, without taking away anything that is free.

Do I need an account?

Not to look around: the map, the listings and the search work without signing up. A free account also gives you turn-by-turn voice navigation, your routes, your saved places, Lana and your achievements, which only count when you really get there.

Does "Tolerated" mean I can sleep there?

It means we know of no rule that forbids it, not that there is a permit. That is why we keep it apart from "Publicly legal", which does have a rule behind it, and why every listing tells you where its claims come from.

Is it an official app?

No. VanLife is not affiliated with any public body. Each place's rules come from its local council and we link them from the listing when they exist; fuel prices come from the Spanish Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge.

What do you do with my data?

We don't sell it. The first time you open the app you choose what to share: usage analytics start off and crash reports start on, and you can change either at any time from Profile. You can delete your account from within the app.

Which languages is it in?

The app and this website are in English, Spanish, French and German.

Where can I download it?

It is on Google Play and the App Store: scan your store’s code on this page with your phone and it takes you straight to the download.
